If you are asking how much a fractional CFO costs, the honest answer is that there is no single sticker price. The fee tracks the work: the hours you need, the state of your books, and whether you are preparing for a raise or a sale. Most engagements are billed by the hour, on a monthly retainer, or as a scoped project, at a fraction of a full-time finance chief.

Jon Allen, CPA, President of Finance at Ampleo, teaches financial modeling at the University of Utah and has built finance teams through venture-backed and private-equity exits. What follows is what moves that number, and how to budget for it.

  • A fractional CFO is billed by the hour, on a monthly retainer, or as a scoped project, so the cost scales with the hours and the work rather than a fixed salary.
  • The price moves with four things: how clean your books are, how many hours you need, your stage, and whether a raise, a sale, or a system build is in play.
  • A full-time CFO is the real comparison: the median wage for financial managers was $166,570 in May 2025 (BLS), and benefits push the loaded cost higher.
  • You pay a fraction of that full-time load because you buy senior judgment for the hours you use, then scale it down when the heavy lifting is done.
  • The fastest way to a real number is a scoping conversation that prices the work in front of you.

Talk to a Finance Expert. A short scoping call is the fastest way to turn "it depends" into a number you can plan around.

What You Are Paying a Fractional CFO For

Cost only makes sense next to what you get, so start there. A fractional CFO is a senior finance leader who works with your company part-time and ongoing, embedded in your leadership team the way our fractional CFO and finance services are built to work, rather than parked in an advisory seat. The work is judgment: which number to trust, which question to ask, and which decision can wait.

You are paying for experience applied at the right moment rather than a stack of reports. A good fractional CFO owns the forecast, the cash plan, and the capital conversation, and leaves a cleaner finance function behind. The best ones give you the difference between a report and a decision.

What a Full-Time CFO Costs

To size a fractional fee, measure it against the thing it replaces: a full-time finance chief on your payroll. Here is what that seat actually costs.

  • Base salary: The median wage for financial managers was $166,570 in May 2025 (BLS), and the top ten percent earned more than $323,270. A seasoned CFO sits toward that upper end.
  • Executive tier: A finance chief ranks among top executives, some of the highest-paid management roles the BLS tracks.
  • Benefits load: Benefits made up roughly 30 percent of total compensation for management employees in 2025 (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation), so the real cost runs well above base pay.
  • Loaded cost (illustrative): About $240,000 to $460,000 a year once benefits are added to the BLS wages above, before any bonus or equity.
  • Other commitments: Recruiting time, severance risk, and a fixed cost that does not flex when the heavy work is done.

For a company that does not yet need a finance chief every day, that is a large fixed commitment to carry. For a closer look at the trade-offs, see our comparison of fractional vs. full-time CFOs.

How Fractional CFO Pricing Works

Across the market, fractional finance help is usually billed by the hour, on a monthly retainer, or as a scoped project. At Ampleo, we price it as packages sized to what is missing in your finance function, so you start with the gap and scale as you grow. Every price is a starting point, scoped to your stage.

Ampleo Essentials: Close the Books

  • Best for: companies that need accurate books and reliable monthly reporting, but not a CFO yet.
  • Team: a staff accountant and an engagement manager.
  • Scope: bookkeeping and accounting through the monthly close, with a financial reporting package and a monthly meeting.
  • Ownership: Ampleo owns the books; you own the decisions.
  • Not included: controller or CFO strategy, forecasting, or board support.
  • Price: from $1,850 a month.

Ampleo Executives: Steer the Business

  • Best for: companies that need senior financial leadership and already have strong accounting discipline.
  • Team: a dedicated senior executive: a CFO, VP of Finance, or senior controller.
  • Scope: strategy, capital, board and lender support, forecasting, and modeling, from 20 hours a month.
  • Ownership: your executive sits on the executive team and owns the outcome.
  • Not included: the accounting team to support the strategy.
  • Price: from $4,000 a month when paired with Essentials.

Ampleo Teams: Run the Function

  • Best for: companies that need best-in-class finance run from strategy to transactions.
  • Team: a custom mix of accountant, controller, and/or CFO, based on need.
  • Scope: industry-focused accounting through CFO work, including the monthly close, day-to-day finance and accounting support, and monthly financial reporting.
  • Ownership: Ampleo owns the function.
  • Not included: some specialty services and complex debt or equity raises.
  • Price: from $5,000 a month.

How the Packages Are Billed

  • Each package can start in 7 days and carries a 12-month commitment.
  • Pricing is a fixed base plus hourly overage, so you pay for a steady scope and only add hours when the work spikes.

When You Need One Seat or One Project

  • Ampleo Staff: staff augmentation with interim accountants, starting at 20 hours a week, for companies with an open finance seat or a temporary workload increase who need qualified people they manage. It starts in 7 days, runs month to month, and is quoted by role, with a 10% premium for on-site work.
  • Ampleo Projects: cleanups and catch-up accounting, system selection and implementation, and other scoped one-time work with a defined deliverable and end date. It starts in 1-2 weeks, runs month to month, and is a fixed fee where possible.

Staff and Projects can stand alone or run alongside any package.

What Moves the Price Up or Down

Two companies can get very different quotes for the same title, and the gap is rarely arbitrary. A handful of factors drive it.

  • The state of your books. Clean, current financials let a CFO go straight to strategy; messy ones mean cleanup first, and cleanup takes hours.
  • The hours you need. A company that needs two days a month pays far less than one that needs two days a week.
  • Your stage and complexity. Multiple entities, inventory, or several revenue lines add work, and work is what you are buying.
  • Deal or financing activity. A raise, a sale, or a lender conversation raises the stakes and the hours in the same quarter.

Deal work deserves its own note, because it is where cost and risk climb together. A fractional CFO is not your auditor or your tax preparer: a quality of earnings review, for example, is diligence rather than an audit, and a sell-side version should come from a team independent of the people who keep your books.

When the Cost Pays for Itself

The fee is easier to approve when you can see what it returns. A fractional CFO earns the cost by finding cash you were leaving on the table, steering you clear of a bad raise or a mispriced deal, and freeing you to run the business instead of the books. Our finance case studies show what that looks like in practice.

Better Butter, a consumer food brand, had never closed its books at month-end before bringing in a project finance team to set up the close, a cash forecast, and a clean chart of accounts. Ken Bayne, its CFO, framed the value in plain terms:

Knowing I had a resource like Ampleo that I could turn on and turn off in 6 months was really valuable.

You are hiring premium people at a premium price, and you will want to hit the ground running instead of running in circles.

Premium is the right word, and no honest firm pretends otherwise. The point of the fractional model is that you buy that senior talent only for the hours you need, then scale it down when the heavy lifting is done. Measured against a full-time CFO, the same experience costs a fraction, because you are not carrying a salary, benefits, and a fixed seat you do not yet need.

How to Get a Real Number for Your Company

The only way to get a precise figure is to scope the work, and you can shorten that conversation by coming prepared. Before you ask for a quote, get clear on four things.

  • Where your books stand today, and who closes them each month.
  • The decisions ahead in the next two to three quarters, such as a raise, a sale, or a new system.
  • How many hours of senior help those decisions realistically need.
  • What a win looks like, so the engagement is scoped to an outcome and stays bounded.

With those in hand, a good firm can price the work quickly and tell you where it would start, where it would scale back, and when you will be ready to hand the seat to a full-time hire. Ampleo has placed fractional CFOs since 1996, with a bench of more than 400 experts, so the scoping call is a conversation about your stage rather than a sales script.

Price the Work and the Fee Follows

The cost of a fractional CFO is not a number you can look up, because the title covers everything from a few advisory hours to an embedded finance team. What you can pin down is the work: the hours, the state of your books, and the decisions ahead. Price those, and the fee follows.

Set against a full-time hire, that fee buys the same seasoned judgment for a fraction of the load, and only for as long as you need it. The best version pays for itself, then works itself out of a job when you are ready for a full-time CFO.
